The Journey — From Venice Beach to Old Town Scottsdale

Josh Carter began tattooing in 1997 on the iconic Venice Beach boardwalk, at just 19 years old. Those early years shaped his foundation — working in street shops, taking every walk-in that came through the door, and learning the trade the hard way.

“I was a dyed-in-the-wool street shop artist,” Josh recalls. “It was all about repetition, respect, and hustle. You had to earn every tattoo.”

After a decade mastering a wide range of styles, Josh found his true calling: traditional Japanese tattooing.

Finding His Style — The Art of Japanese Tattooing

Around 2006, Josh moved to Arizona with his wife and daughter. It was here he made the decision to fully dedicate himself to Japanese art.

“I’ve always been drawn to Japanese culture and design — the flow, symbolism, and storytelling,” Josh says. “It’s taken years to develop my voice within that style, but I’m still learning every day.”

Josh draws inspiration from Edo-era woodblock print masters like Hokusai and Kuniyoshi, ensuring every piece respects traditional composition and movement — while still carrying his unique fingerprint.

His work is known for:

  • Bold, flowing composition that fits the body naturally
  • Deep respect for Japanese iconography and folklore
  • Impeccable technical execution and balance
  • A painter’s eye for color, shape, and flow

“My goal is for every tattoo to look as if it’s always belonged to the person.”

Opening Dame of the West — A Studio Built on Purpose and Positivity

“It took me a while to feel ready to open my own shop,” Josh admits. “When Jon and I started talking, everything just aligned — the timing, the vision, the people. It felt meant to be.”

Every artist on the team is carefully selected not only for their skill but for their energy — creating an environment where both clients and artists thrive.

Josh’s Philosophy — Tattoos as Collaboration and Connection

Josh approaches every tattoo as a partnership between artist and client.

“I want the experience to be as meaningful for me as it is for my clients,” he explains. “I value the relationships we build — it’s not just about ink, it’s about connection.”

His clients are typically thoughtful, established individuals who seek artistry and precision. Many travel from around the country for his Japanese full sleeves, back pieces, and custom fine-line work.

The Artist’s Purpose — Leaving a Mark Beyond Tattooing

“There’s nobody in the valley who tattoos like me,” Josh says, not with arrogance, but with pride in years of effort and evolution.

With more than two decades behind the machine, Josh sees success not just in the art he creates — but in the legacy he builds. Helping younger artists grow, fostering creativity, and leaving a positive mark on everyone who walks through Dame of the West — that’s what drives him.
